Forkortelsene over kan modifiseres ved å tillegge opptil fire
bestemte bokstaver etter forkortelsen for den aktuelle polymeren.
Eksempelvis vil PS kunne bli PS-HI når det er stor slagseighet (high
impact) som blir beskrevet/omtalt.
Når to eller flere polymerer kombineres (legeringer eller blends)
foreslår ISO 1043 at symbolene for basispolymerene skilles med et +
(plusstegn) og at forkortelsene settes i parentes. Eksempel: en legering
av polymetylmetakrylat og akrylnitril-butadien-styren skal skrives som
(PMMA + ABS).
